HAZARDS

Pink Shirt Day is an anti-bullying initiative that started in Canada in 2007. It began when students in Nova Scotia stood up for a peer who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt.

WHAT IS BULLYING?

Bullying is a form of aggression where a power imbalance allows one person to intimidate, harm, or control another. It can cause emotional distress, anxiety, low self-esteem, and depression.

TYPES OF BULLYING:

• Physical: Hitting, pushing, or using force.
• Verbal: Name-calling, insults, or threats.
• Social/Relational: Exclusion, gossip, or reputation damage.
• Bullying: Aggressive and unwanted behaviour that is intended to hurt or frighten someone smaller or less powerful.
• Harassment: A form of discrimination that violates Canada’s Human Rights Laws, targeting a person’s age, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, family/marital status, or disability.

BULLYING: EFFECTS AND WAYS TO ADDRESS IT

• Speak Up – Report bullying to a trusted person (teacher, employer, authority).
• Stay Safe – Avoid engaging with bullies and seek support from friends or counselors.
• Document It – Keep records of bullying incidents, especially online.
• Encourage Kindness – Promote an inclusive and supportive environment.
• Legal Protections – If bullying becomes harassment, seek help under Canada’s Human Rights Laws. Bullying has profound consequences, but awareness, support, and action can help prevent and address it effectively.
